Philips Offers Free Replacements After Update Bricked Smart Lighting Hubs

If you own a Philips Hue Bridge Pro and it suddenly stopped working after a recent firmware update, there’s good news: Philips is replacing affected units free of charge, regardless of warranty status.

What Happened

As first reported by Ars Technica, Philips confirmed that firmware update 2071353020, released in June, has caused about 100 Bridge Pro devices to stop working. The issue only affects users who had automatic updates disabled, remained on an older firmware version for an extended period, and then manually installed the update after storing it on the Bridge device for more than 10 days. It’s a very specific scenario, but the impact is real: those devices are now bricked.

Free Replacements — But You’ll Need to Set Up From Scratch

Philips says anyone affected can contact support for a replacement. Given the price hike for US customers, the free replacement is a welcome gesture. However, you’ll need to set up the new device from scratch — and given that the Bridge Pro can connect up to 150 lights and 50 accessories with custom schedules and shortcuts, that’s no small task.

A Fix Is Already Rolling Out

Philips also told Ars Technica that a newer update is already rolling out to prevent any additional Bridge Pro devices from falling victim to the same issue. If you own a Bridge Pro and haven’t been affected, make sure automatic updates are enabled — and if you’ve been holding off on updating, you may want to wait for the fixed version to reach your device.
