It seems harmless enough: you find an old printer at a yard sale for $20, or you decide to sell that smartphone collecting dust in your drawer. But what most people don’t realize is that these seemingly innocent devices can be a goldmine for data thieves. Personal photos, tax documents, passwords, and even your complete digital identity often remain accessible on second-hand electronics, even after you think you have erased them.

The Deletion Myth

Many users believe that clicking “Delete,” formatting a drive, or performing a factory reset is enough to wipe their personal data permanently. The reality is far more concerning. These actions typically only remove the file directory, like taking the index out of a book while leaving every page intact. The actual data remains on the storage medium and can be recovered in minutes using freely available software.

Devices You Never Think About

While most people remember to wipe their laptops and smartphones, the real risks often lie in devices that rarely get a second thought:

Printers

Modern multi-function printers are essentially computers with internal hard drives or flash memory. Office and law firm printers routinely store copies of every document scanned, printed, or copied. Without a thorough wipe of the internal memory, sensitive documents such as scanned ID cards, tax forms, contracts, and medical records become accessible to the next owner. Wi-Fi credentials for built-in scan-to-cloud features also often remain stored on the device.

Network Attached Storage (NAS) Systems

Selling a NAS system? Removing the hard drives is not enough. Many NAS enclosures have separate internal flash memory that stores the entire operating system independently of the drives. Admin passwords, Wi-Fi configurations, and cloud synchronization tokens can remain permanently stored there. A new owner who powers on the device could potentially gain access to your home network or cloud services, even without your original hard drives installed.

Smartphones and Tablets

A standard factory reset is usually sufficient for modern encrypted smartphones, but older Android devices without active encryption can leave fragments of photos, chats, and login details in memory. One of the most common mistakes is forgetting to sign out of accounts. If Google or Apple accounts are not manually disconnected before a reset, the activation lock remains active, and your cloud services could still be accessible.

SSDs and USB Drives

Unlike traditional hard disk drives, SSDs and USB sticks use a process called wear leveling that constantly redistributes data across memory cells. This means standard data shredding tools often fail to reach all data areas, leaving recoverable fragments behind even after multiple overwrite passes.

Smart TVs, Routers, and Streaming Devices

Your Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, smart home hub, or router stores Netflix logins, voice profiles, VPN credentials, and VoIP data. Routers are particularly risky as they store not only your Wi-Fi password but also full login credentials provided by your internet service provider.

How to Properly Wipe Your Devices

To ensure you are not handing over your digital life along with your old hardware, follow these steps based on device type:

  • PCs, Laptops, SSDs: Use the Secure Erase function, which can typically be initiated through the motherboard’s BIOS/UEFI or through manufacturer software such as Samsung Magician. This resets all memory cells simultaneously and securely.
  • Smartphones and Tablets: Before resetting, manually sign out of all Google, Apple, and cloud accounts, and disable features like “Find My” or anti-theft security. Remove SIM and microSD cards before performing the factory reset.
  • Printers, Routers, Smart Home Devices: Use the physical hardware reset button on the device casing and access the admin menu to explicitly execute functions like “Delete all data/logs.” Disconnect all linked apps as well.
  • USB Sticks and Memory Cards: Old SD cards from drones, dashcams, or cameras often contain highly personal recordings. Since cheap storage media are difficult to securely erase, it is often safer to physically destroy them rather than sell or reuse them.

When in Doubt, Use a Hammer

If a storage device is damaged or cannot be accessed through software, physical destruction may be the only solution. SSD circuit boards should be crushed, traditional hard drives drilled through, and memory chips or USB sticks mechanically broken before they end up as e-waste. They should never be disposed of in regular household trash.

Buying New? Look for Built-in Security

Modern devices increasingly include security features that make data erasure easier and more thorough. Smartphones with hardware-based isolation, such as Google’s Tensor security chip on the Pixel 10, ensure sensitive processes run in isolation. Printers with automated memory clearing, like HP’s OfficeJet Pro series, ensure no readable document fragments remain in the cache. And high-end SSDs like the Samsung 990 PRO offer hardware-based AES 256-bit encryption combined with Secure Erase compatibility.

A Five-Minute Check Can Save You a World of Trouble

Digital legacy data is far more valuable than it appears. Many devices store far more data than their owners realize, from cloud accounts and personal documents to complete identity profiles. Selling hardware without checking it first could mean inadvertently giving away your entire digital life. A thorough, professional reset typically takes just a few minutes but can prevent sensitive data from falling into the wrong hands.
