Google has quietly published a new Play Store listing for “Magic Pointer,” an unannounced app built for Googlebooks. Updated on July 10, the app turns your cursor into a contextual AI tool that can act on whatever you select on screen.
What Magic Pointer Does
Magic Pointer is essentially a Gemini shortcut embedded in your cursor. Select any text or image on screen, and the cursor transforms into a contextual tool that can:
- Send an image to Google Lens for visual search
- Generate a related image using AI
- Surface shopping actions without opening a separate app
It’s designed to keep you in your current workflow instead of jumping out to a chatbot or search tool. Standard Android devices currently show as incompatible, suggesting it may be exclusive to Googlebooks — Google’s Chromebook-equivalent platform for Android tablets.
Why It Matters
This is another step in Google’s strategy to embed Gemini across every surface. Rather than opening an app or typing a command, Magic Pointer lets you interact with AI through a natural extension of what you’re already doing — selecting text. If it works as advertised, it could change how we think about AI assistants on desktop-like devices. No official announcement from Google yet, but the Play Store listing suggests a launch may be coming soon.
