Garmin Gear Tracking: New feature tracks distance, hours and lifespan of gear

Garmin is rolling out a new feature to its Edge cycling computers — gear tracking — which monitors the distance, hours, and usage days of bike components, trainers, and complete bikes.

The feature, now appearing in Garmin Connect, automatically logs equipment usage during every ride. Users can set up their gear — from tires and chains to cassettes and entire bike frames — and receive alerts as components approach the end of their service life.

The practical benefits are clear: regular maintenance and timely replacement reduce the risk of component failure caused by material fatigue. A stretched chain, for example, can damage a cassette — and on high-end derailleurs, cassettes are considerably more expensive than a chain. With cheaper drivetrains, it might be more economical to run the entire drivetrain until it wears out, but the choice is yours.

Adding gear to Garmin Connect is straightforward. Maintenance and replacement intervals can be configured for each component. User reports indicate the feature is already live, though early feedback notes that communication around the feature and setup instructions could be clearer.

For cyclists who maintain their own bikes, this is a genuinely useful addition — no more guessing when that chain was last replaced or whether those tires have seen too many miles. For the competitive crowd, it could even prevent equipment-related failures during races.
