Samsung is gearing up to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra at an Unpacked event in London on July 22. But a new rumor from the reliable Ice Universe has revealed the surprising trade-off Samsung made to deliver what could be its most crease-free foldable yet.
According to the leak, Samsung completely redesigned the hinge mechanism on both devices compared to last year’s Galaxy Z Fold7. The result? A display that’s virtually crease-free — on par with the Oppo Find N6 and possibly even the upcoming iPhone Ultra.
But there’s a catch.
The new hinge comes with a folding and unfolding action that Ice Universe describes as “more decisive.” In plain English: it’s no longer as easy to hold the phone at certain angles as before. That’s the sacrifice Samsung deemed necessary to banish the dreaded center crease.
What does this mean in practice? You probably won’t be able to prop the Z Fold8 or Fold8 Ultra open at any arbitrary angle — only specific positions might hold steady.
