Sony thinks it’s cracked the code for home theater this year. The company isn’t just launching new TVs — it’s rethinking how televisions reproduce color with a new technology called Accurate RGB, while also expanding its lineup with products like the BRAVIA Theater Trio.
After an early look at the lineup in New York, it’s clear why Sony believes Accurate RGB could be the most impressive story in its 2026 portfolio.
Why Sony thinks premium TVs are getting it wrong
Sony’s argument is simple: most premium TVs are optimized for ideal viewing conditions, not real life. The company shared data suggesting only about 13% of viewers watch content in settings resembling a movie theater. The other 87% are watching in bright living rooms, open floor plans, and spaces where lighting conditions change throughout the day.
That’s one reason a TV can look incredible at night but less impressive during the day when sunlight, reflections, and ambient light compete with the image.
What Accurate RGB actually does differently
Here’s the technical bit. In most Mini LED and QLED displays, a blue or white light source is filtered to produce colors. Sony’s approach is fundamentally different. Instead of starting with a single light source and deriving color later, Accurate RGB uses independently controlled red, green, and blue diodes directly within the backlight system. The desired color is generated at the source before the image even reaches the LCD layer.
The result, according to Sony, is cleaner and more accurate color reproduction. The company demonstrated three specific advantages:
Color volume. Sony says Accurage RGB delivers roughly twice the color volume of the original BRAVIA 9 Mini LED and up to four times that of the BRAVIA 8 OLED. Bright scenes stay vibrant rather than washing out.
Viewing angles. Because color is created through both the backlight and LCD layers, image quality stays more consistent from different seating positions — critical for larger living rooms.
Smooth gradation. Sony says it can reduce visible color banding and produce smoother transitions in scenes with subtle color shifts — skies, sunsets, gradients.
OLED versus Mini LED: Sony’s answer
Sony positions Accurate RGB as a bridge between OLED’s deep blacks and contrast and Mini LED’s brightness advantages. The company claims it delivers OLED-like viewing angles and contrast while maintaining the brightness benefits of Mini LED.

BRAVIA 9 II — Sony’s flagship, available in 65, 75, 85, and 115-inch sizes. Designed to match the performance of Sony’s professional mastering displays.
