Samsung Electronics and LG Uplus have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) technology, which aims to turn cell towers into radar systems for 6G networks.
ISAC technology combines wireless communication with sensing capabilities, allowing 6G base stations to detect objects, measure distances, and track movement using radio signals. Think of it as giving cell towers the ability to “see” their surroundings without requiring separate radar hardware.
The potential applications are vast. In smart factories, 6G towers could track inventory and monitor equipment positions. In autonomous driving, they could detect pedestrians and vehicles beyond the line of sight. In smart cities, they could monitor traffic flow and crowd density in real time.
This partnership puts Samsung and LG Uplus at the forefront of 6G development. The companies plan to conduct joint research and testing over the next several years, with the goal of having ISAC-ready infrastructure ready by the time 6G standards are finalized. 6G commercial deployment is expected around 2030.
