Apple continues to define the cutting edge of smartphones, bringing artificial intelligence and new camera capabilities to its latest lineup.
Apple introduced the iPhone 17, as well as the slim iPhone Air, on September 9 during its keynote presentation. Three models were launched: the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Here’s a breakdown of the differences between Apple’s latest devices to help you choose the best fit for your needs.
Key features of the iPhone 17 lineup
The iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max all share core features, with expanded video capabilities and additional storage in the higher-end models.
The base model iPhone 17 is the consumer version with excellent features, but it lacks the professional focus of the Pro and Pro Max. The Pro features a more powerful chip, enabling superior camera systems and enhanced mobile gaming. The Pro Max offers storage up to 2TB.
Design
The front cover of the iPhone 17, and both front and back covers of the Pro models, are protected by Ceramic Shield 2, Apple’s proprietary ceramic-glass mix that improves scratch resistance. The 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display offers up to a 120Hz refresh rate, which adjusts based on the content. Unlike some previous iPhone models, the iPhone 17 is available in a single size.
In the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, Apple introduces a new brushed-aluminum unibody design. To accommodate components around the larger battery, which takes up significant space inside the phone, a raised camera bump houses the camera system at the top of the device. For added durability and wireless charging compatibility, Apple recommends the iPhone 17 Pro Clear Case with MagSafe.
Color options and ports
The iPhone 17 comes in five colors: black, lavender, mist blue, teal, and white. The iPhone 17 Pro comes in deep blue, cosmic silver, graphite, and natural titanium. The iPhone 17 Pro Max shares the same color options as the Pro. All models feature a USB-C port, continuing Apple’s transition away from Lightning.
Pricing and Availability
The iPhone 17 starts at $799, the iPhone Air at $899, the iPhone 17 Pro at $999, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max at $1,199. Pre-orders began shortly after the September 9 announcement, with general availability following on September 20.
