AirPods have technically worked on Android since 2016, but key features—precise battery status, automatic ear detection, conversation awareness, on-device settings control—were locked behind Apple’s proprietary Bluetooth implementation. That changed with Android 16 QPR3 (March 2026 Pixel Drop), and the fix is rolling into stable Android 17 plus OnePlus/Oppo/Realme’s Android 16 updates.
LibrePods, an app previously limited to rooted devices, is now on the Play Store and works without root. Free features include: real-time battery percentages per bud, ear detection toggle, ANC/Transparency mode switching, and press-and-hold gesture customization. All features unlock free via the GitHub build. Supported models: AirPods Pro (2nd gen), AirPods Pro (3rd gen), and AirPods Max. Older models remain limited to basic Bluetooth audio.
This is part of Google’s broader ecosystem bridge-building: Nearby Share (AirDrop equivalent) on select devices, RCS push, and now seamless AirPods support. For switchers, one less reason to stay locked in.
