Android 17 Is Draining Your Pixel’s Battery Faster — Here’s What’s Actually Happening

Excessive heat and rapid battery drain after major system updates — like the arrival of Android 17 on Google Pixel devices — can persist for several days after the update finishes installing and your phone reboots.

Let me share my experience. My Pixel 10 Pro recently ran noticeably warmer than usual for a few days after I installed Android 17, and its battery life took a noticeable hit. On the first day, the battery dropped to just 20% by bedtime — a sharp decline from the 40% or more I typically have left when I plug it in overnight.

This went on for a few days, but after that, the phone returned to its pre-upgrade battery life and normal operating temperatures. Here is why this happens and why it is completely normal.

Your Pixel Is Working Overtime After a Software Update

During a software update, your phone runs hot because the CPU has a heavy workload while the installation is in progress. Once the process finishes and the phone reboots, things usually return to normal if the update was minor. However, major upgrades — such as installing a new Android version — can cause the phone to run warmer than usual for a few days due to various background tasks that continue after the update completes.

After an update, your phone works extra hours to optimize apps and organize data, all happening in the background even while you are using the device. Caches get rebuilt, files get reindexed, and apps get optimized for the new OS version — all of which demand additional processing power.

In many cases, app developers release updates to optimize their apps for new Android versions, triggering a cascade of app updates on your device. This can generate extra heat, especially when combined with the background processes still running after the update is complete.

For Pixel phones specifically, some on-device AI models and related data may also need to be updated or reprocessed following a major upgrade, consuming even more processing power and leading to higher operating temperatures.

Combine all of that with the fact that you are likely using your phone more than usual after a major update — exploring new features and customization options — and you get a phone that genuinely runs hotter than normal. But this is a standard occurrence and nothing to worry about.

All that extra processing consumes more battery than normal, which not only drains it faster but also generates additional heat, further contributing to that post-update warmth. As I mentioned, you are also likely to use your phone more while tinkering with new features, compounding the effect on power consumption and resulting in shorter battery life.

On Pixel phones specifically, the Adaptive Battery feature may need some time to readjust to your usage patterns after a major software update. This can temporarily contribute to increased battery drain and noticeably shorter battery life.

When combined, these effects can take a noticeable toll on battery life for a few days. In my case, the battery sat at about 20% instead of the usual 40% or more on the first night before I plugged the phone in. The next night, the percentage was a bit better — nearly 30% — but still lower than I expected. After a few days, though, everything returned to normal.

Don’t Panic If Your Pixel Stays Hot for a Few Days

So, to summarize: your Pixel running hotter and having shorter battery life is completely normal after a major software update — and Android 17 definitely qualifies as a major update. These effects can last anywhere from 24 to 72 hours. In other words, your phone may run hotter and drain its battery faster for about three days, possibly even a day or two longer.

However, if your battery life does not improve and your Pixel stays hotter than usual for longer than that, something may be wrong. An app could be misbehaving because it does not play well with the new Android version, or the update might have introduced a random battery drain bug, which can occasionally happen.

The good news is that Pixel phones include several diagnostic tools that can help you determine whether something is out of the ordinary, and they are worth checking if the problem persists. To do so, open Settings, search for “Battery diagnostics,” and run the tests available there.

You can also manually update your apps, since automatic updates do not always kick in immediately after a major OS upgrade. Restart your phone and try a few other things that should help cool it down. If the issues persist, the best course of action may be to contact customer support.
