USB Connector Types: The Definitive Tier List

We all live with these little metal ports every day. Some are brilliant. Some deserve to be cast into a volcano. Here’s the tier list — focusing on physical connector formats, not generational standards (USB 3.0 is obviously better than 2.0, but that’s a different conversation).

S-Tier: USB-C — The GOAT

No contest. Reversible, carries power, data, and video, supports up to 240W charging and 80Gbps data (USB4 v2). It’s the one port to rule them all. Not perfect — cable quality variance is a nightmare and power-hungry laptops can still struggle — but it’s the best USB has ever been.

A-Tier: USB-B 3.0 (The Blue One That Looks Like a Covered Bridge)

Surprise entry. It’s bulky, yes, but that shape means you can’t plug it in wrong. Found on printers, external drives, and audio interfaces. The 3.0 version adds the blue insert and five extra pins for SuperSpeed. You rarely touch it, it just works, and when you do, there’s no ambiguity.

B-Tier: USB-B 2.0 (The Barn-Shaped One)

Same foolproof shape as its 3.0 sibling, just slower. Still found on plenty of printers, DACs, and older gear. Niche but reliable. The size is ridiculous for modern devices, but for stationary equipment? Fine.

C-Tier: USB-A (The Original), Mini-USB (The Trapezoid), Micro-USB-B (Noooo)

USB-A: The rectangle we all know. Not reversible, limited power, but ubiquitous. It’s the cockroach of connectors — it’ll outlive us all.

Mini-USB: The trapezoid from the mid-2000s. Objectively better than Micro-USB — more durable, easier to orient by feel. Still hate it, but it’s less bad.

Micro-USB-B: The smaller trapezoid. Fragile, orientation-ambiguous in low light, and the spring tabs inside the port (not the cable) fail constantly. A dark era.

F-Tier: Micro-USB (The Proprietary/OTG Variants That Broke Everything)

Micro-USB-AB, Micro-USB 3.0 (the wide one with the extra hump), and whatever weird off-spec variants manufacturers dreamed up. Cast them into the fire. The worst part? Losing the one specific cable for an older USB audio interface or gadget can brick the device entirely.

The Verdict

USB-C won. Everything else is legacy. But next time you plug in a USB-B 3.0 cable and it just works on the first try, give it a nod of respect. It earned its A-tier spot.
