Sony Xperia 1 VIII Sales Strong; Company Calls microSD Slot and 3.5mm Jack ‘Integral’ to Identity

Japanese outlet ITmedia Mobile interviewed Sony executives Shohachi Ike and Eri Kitazawa, who delivered encouraging news: the Xperia 1 VIII is selling well despite its premium price tag. In Japan, the phone crossed the ¥200,000 mark (roughly $1,300), yet “regardless of rising costs, sales have remained solid and customer satisfaction is very high,” the representatives said (machine translated). European sales have also “grown a lot” as Sony strengthened its direct-to-consumer channels.

Camera Redesign Driven by User Feedback

The Xperia 1 VIII’s camera island was redesigned to accommodate a better telephoto sensor. Sony ditched the variable zoom mechanism (85–170mm on the Xperia 1 VII) for a fixed 70mm focal length paired with a new 48MP sensor — up from 12MP — enabling 140mm lossless zoom that approaches the long end of its predecessor’s range. The change saved internal space, allowing a larger sensor without making the phone thicker.

Sony polls its customers on purchase drivers. “In our analysis of reasons for purchase, microSD compatibility was ranked highly,” said one representative. The other added: “I believe the presence of the microSD slot and headphone jack is now an integral part of Xperia’s identity.”

No Xperia 5 Series in Sight

When asked about the missing mid-range Xperia 5 series, Sony’s answer wasn’t encouraging. The company acknowledges demand in the ¥100,000 price bracket but says it’s currently focused on two pillars: the flagship 1 series (“which best embodies the essence of Xperia”) and the budget-friendly 10 series (“the most cost-effective way to experience Sony’s features”). A new mid-range lineup hasn’t been decided.

Pricing Context

European pricing held steady at €1,500 / £1,400 for the base 12/256GB model — same as the Xperia 1 VII. In the UK, the Xperia 1 VIII currently retails around £1,399 at Amazon; in Germany, €1,499.

What This Signals

Sony isn’t chasing volume. It’s doubling down on a niche: enthusiasts who value camera control, expandable storage, wired audio, and a clean software experience — and are willing to pay a premium for them. As long as that cohort keeps buying, the Xperia 1 series will continue. The question is whether it can grow beyond its loyal core.
