A Smart Home With No Internet? It’s More Possible Than It Sounds

A smart home without the internet might sound like a contradiction, but hear me out. There are already plenty of smart home devices that work without an internet connection, and you can take it a step further by building a complete vendor-agnostic smart home system that runs locally.

What Does “No Internet” Actually Mean?

Most smart home devices today rely on cloud services. Your smart lights talk to a server somewhere, your voice assistant processes commands remotely, and your security cameras stream footage to the cloud. This means when your internet goes down, many of these devices become useless — or at best, severely limited.

A local smart home flips this model. Instead of relying on the cloud, devices communicate directly with a local hub on your network using protocols like Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Matter over Thread. The hub processes automations locally, without phoning home to a server.

What You Need

To build a smart home that works without internet, you need three things:

  • A local hub: Home Assistant running on a Raspberry Pi or similar device is the gold standard. It supports thousands of devices and keeps everything local.
  • Local-protocol devices: Look for devices that support Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Matter rather than Wi-Fi devices that require cloud accounts. Philips Hue lights work locally via the Hue Bridge. Aqara sensors use Zigbee. IKEA Tradfri devices are also local-first.
  • Local voice control: Services like Home Assistant’s Assist or a Rhasspy setup let you control everything by voice without sending audio to the cloud.

The Benefits

A local smart home is faster — there is no round trip to a server for every command. It is more reliable — your automations keep working even when your ISP has an outage. And it is private — your data stays on your network.

Is It Worth It?

Building a fully local smart home requires more initial effort than buying a few Wi-Fi plugs and setting up a Google Home. But once it is running, it is more reliable, more responsive, and completely yours. If you value privacy and reliability over convenience, a local smart home is absolutely achievable today.
