Android has come a long way since its early days, and whether you’re a longtime user or a recent convert from iOS, a treasure trove of powerful features is hiding just beneath the surface. I find myself constantly pulling back the curtain for friends and family, showing them the lesser-known tricks their phones have been capable of all along. Here are five of my absolute favorites.
1. Notification History: Never Miss a Swipe Again
We’ve all been there — you accidentally swipe away a notification, and suddenly that important message or reminder is gone forever. But here’s the thing: it doesn’t have to be. Android has included a Notification History feature since Android 11 (2020), and once you turn it on, it’s an absolute game-changer.
Notification History keeps a running log of every notification you’ve received over the past 24 hours. Missed a text? Swiped away an email alert? No problem — just dive into the history and catch up. It’s disabled by default, which feels like a crime, but enabling it takes seconds. Head to Settings > Notifications > Notification History and flip the switch. You’ll wonder how you lived without it.
2. App Pinning: Pass Your Phone With Confidence
Handing your phone to someone else always comes with a twinge of anxiety. Will they accidentally scroll through your photos? Open your messages? App Pinning is the elegant solution to this very modern problem.
When you pin an app, the screen locks to that specific app. No home button, no recent apps view, no prying eyes. You can even set it to lock the phone when someone tries to leave the pinned app. It’s perfect for handing your phone to a child for YouTube, letting a friend snap a photo, or showing someone a specific page without them wandering off.
To enable it, head to Settings > Security & Privacy, search for “App Pinning” or “Pin app,” and toggle it on. Then, when you’re in an app, hit the recent apps button and tap the pin icon. Simple, secure, genius.
3. Long-Press Quick Settings Icons: Go Deeper Instantly
We all use the Quick Settings panel to toggle Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or flashlight. But did you know you can long-press those icons to jump directly into the full settings menu for that feature?
Instead of tapping Bluetooth to toggle it on and then navigating through Settings to find a device to pair, just long-press the Bluetooth icon in Quick Settings. You’ll land right in the detailed Bluetooth menu, ready to connect. The same works for Wi-Fi, mobile data, Do Not Disturb, and more. It’s a small trick, but it saves dozens of taps every single day.
4. Snooze Notifications: Out of Sight, Not Out of Mind
Sometimes you see a notification, but you can’t deal with it right now. You don’t want to dismiss it entirely — you’ll forget. Enter the snooze feature, one of Android’s most underappreciated tools.
When a notification appears, expand it and look for the small bell icon near the bottom. Tap it, and you can snooze that notification for 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, or 2 hours. It’ll disappear from your tray and come back when you’re ready. It’s perfect for that email you need to reply to later, a reminder to call someone back, or a task you can’t handle mid-meeting. I use this nearly every day, and I rarely hear anyone else talk about it.
5. Double-Tap the Power Button: Your Camera, Instantly
Last but not least, let’s talk about the power button. This is the feature I probably use more than any other, and it still shocks me how many people don’t know about it: double-tap the power button to launch your camera.
No swiping, no hunting for an icon, no unlocking. Just two quick presses and you’re snapping photos. I’ve been using this since the Galaxy S9 days, and it’s saved me from missing countless moments. Most Android phones also let you customize what the double-tap does — flashlight, a specific app, or the camera. And a long-press can wake your voice assistant (Gemini, Bixby, or Google Assistant).
Don’t Let These Features Gather Dust
Your Android phone is packed with thoughtful features that make life easier, smoother, and more private. The only catch is finding them. Try these five out, get comfortable with them, and before you know it, you’ll be the one showing your friends and family what they’ve been missing.
