Following our report on the confusing software update policy for the newly announced Edge 70 Max, Motorola has reached out to provide an official clarification.
The Official Statement
A Motorola company representative contacted us directly after our initial story and provided this statement:
“We can confirm that Edge 70 Max arrives with up to three OS upgrades and up to 5 years of SMR. Lenovo and Motorola Mobility are dedicated to meeting the requirements set out within the Lot X regulation and will continue to deliver security, corrective and functionality updates to our phones and tablets, to help ensure the longevity and operation of our products.”
What Caused the Confusion
The controversy began when readers noticed conflicting information on Motorola’s regional product pages. The main specifications touted “up to 3 Android OS upgrades and 5 years of security updates,” while footnotes on the same pages indicated only “2 OS upgrades and 3 years of security updates.”
Motorola did not directly explain the discrepancy, but it appears the footnote was carried over from other device product pages and was never updated for the Edge 70 Max.
The “Up To” Problem
One lingering concern is the “up to” language in Motorola’s policy. This technically allows Motorola to deliver just one or two OS upgrades without breaking its promise. A stated minimum commitment would provide far more reassurance to buyers considering the Edge 70 Max.
As software update policies become increasingly important in shopping decisions, clearer communication from manufacturers is essential. We hope Motorola takes this opportunity to set a new standard for transparency in its update commitments.
