Imagine being able to seamlessly switch from a text conversation to a video call with friends, family, or colleagues – without having to leave your messaging app. Sounds like a dream come true, right? Well, we might be one step closer to making that a reality. The GSM Association (GSMA) has announced the finalized RCS In model Profile 4.0, which introduces a feature called Messaging-Initiated Video Calls (MIVC).
MIVC allows users to initiate video calls from their messaging apps, making it possible to turn 1-to-1 or group chats into face-to-face conversations. But what’s more impressive is that MIVC also enables group members to join an ongoing video call even if they missed the initial invite. The logs of the video call will also be synced with the chat timeline, ensuring a seamless and continuous conversation.
The GSMA touts MIVC as a game-changer, paving the way for the most widely supported video call feature across a broad range of devices and networks. However, before we get too excited, it’s essential to note that Apple and Google have yet to announce their support for this feature. Without their backing, it’s unclear when or if we’ll be able to enjoy cross-platform video calls directly from our messaging apps.
RCS In model Profile 4.0 also brings some other exciting features to the table. Users will now be able to format their text messages with styles like bold, italics, and strikethrough, and share higher-quality audio, video, and photos. While we wait for Apple and Google to weigh in on MIVC, one thing is certain – RCS is moving in the right direction, and we can expect even more innovative features in the future.
