Update your iPhone now: DarkSword exploits just got patched on iOS 18

Apple is rolling out a new patch for old iOS versions to protect users from the widespread hacking exploit known as DarkSword. Apple is releasing this new update for iOS 18 users today—anyone on the latest iOS 26 release is already safe.

Apple told WIRED that the new update would automatically install on devices with auto-update enabled. If you’re not automatically installing updates, just check for updates from your Settings app. Apple encourages iPhone owners to update to iOS 26 to receive its “most advanced protections,” but at least this specific bug is now fixed.

What is the DarkSword exploit?

DarkSword is a new exploit in iOS that essentially acts as a toolkit, allowing hackers to steal information and fully compromise an iPhone running any version of iOS between 18.4 and 18.7. Hackers are using malicious websites to gain access to passwords, browser history, photos, crypto wallet, and even messages.

Google identified DarkSword back in November 2025, especially in Turkey, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and Ukraine. These areas had instances of DarkSword being deployed through three different malware called Ghostblade, Ghostknife, and Ghostsaber.

Here’s How I Made iOS 26 Look More Like iOS 18

iOS 26 is out now as a free upgrade for compatible iPhones, and with it comes Apple’s new Liquid Glass aesthetic. So what if you don’t like what Apple has done with your iPhone?

Apple’s second patch against DarkSword

Apple has rolled out a ‘backporting’ patch, which refers to releasing an update for an older version of the operating system. Apple has already released a security patch to fend off DarkSword on the latest iOS version last month, and is now looking out for users on the older iOS 18 versions.

The need to provide a security update for an older version has become necessary for Apple. WIRED reports that many Apple users have chosen not to update to iOS 26, mainly due to their resistance to the new features introduced in iOS 26. With a sizable user base still on an older version, Apple is providing these users protection against hackers.
