I 3D Printed My Own Phone Cases and Was Genuinely Surprised by the Results

After owning a 3D printer for a while, you start looking at everyday objects and thinking, “I could make that.” But there’s one thing I use daily that I’d never attempted to print: a phone case. I finally gave it a shot, and the results genuinely surprised me.

I’d seen 3D-printed phone case models online, but I never believed an FDM printer could match the fit and finish of injection-molded cases. I was mostly wrong. The cases you’ll see in this article impressed me, and I even designed my own.

Why I Thought 3D-Printed Cases Would Disappoint

Hard to Beat Injection Molding

Most commercial phone cases use injection molding—molten plastic forced into a precise mold cavity. This produces incredibly thin, exact-fitting cases. I doubted an FDM printer could rival that precision, especially regarding thickness. I prefer minimal cases (I’ve been using my Pixel 10 caseless) and worried a print thin enough for my taste would snap during installation.

The material was another concern. TPU is popular for cases and printable on FDM printers, but I dislike TPU’s feel and have heard it’s tricky to print. My old budget printer also struggled with fine detail, which held me back. Upgrading to a Bambu Lab P1S finally made this experiment worth trying.

It Went Better Than Expected

First Print: A Pixel 10 Case from MakerWorld

I started with a Pixel 10 case by Joak1m on MakerWorld. It looked suitably thin, had proper cutouts for buttons and ports, and a separate camera ring for easier printing and color swaps.

Printed at 0.16mm layer height with no supports, it took just 50 minutes (including a filament color change). The result snapped on easily and felt secure—though removal isn’t effortless, which is common with many commercial cases too. At ~1mm thick, it’s actually thinner than my previous 2mm case, and only slightly thicker than my 0.65mm aramid fiber case. Thin enough for my stamp of approval.

Experiment Two: A Monstera Leaf Voronoi Case

For something more creative, I used a Voronoi-style Pixel 10 model by The Kwijibo on Printables as a base. I spent hours using a Monstera leaf SVG as a “cookie cutter” on all sides. The result isn’t perfect, but as a first prototype, it’s surprisingly cool—and it stays on despite some delicate sections.

Experiment Three: A Decorative Back Cover

I also tried a flat decorative back cover with cutout shapes in multiple colors. This one disappointed—I didn’t account for the Pixel 10’s rounded edges, so the plastic protrudes awkwardly. It’s a learning experience for next time.

Where 3D-Printed Cases Fall Short

You Can Feel the Filament

All cases here were printed in PLA, which isn’t known for flexibility—it’s somewhat brittle. So far no cracking issues, but PLA has a waxy, “milk carton” feel. Layer lines and sharp edges straight off the printer are noticeable, though light sanding fixes this if you’re willing to put in the effort.

Durability is the real concern. PLA or PETG would likely shatter on impact. TPU is the better choice for protection—but since I was using no case at all before, that’s not a dealbreaker for me.

It’s Nice to Be Surprised

3D printing your own phone case is absolutely viable if your printer can handle it. This experience showed me how limiting my old printer was. The case looks great, printed fast, and if you want something unique or unavailable in stores, it’s worth a shot.
