Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp Now Offer Paid Subscription Plans — Starting at $2.99 Per Month

Meta has officially launched subscription plans for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, marking a significant shift in its monetization strategy. The new Plus tiers start as low as $2.99 per month and offer exclusive features including custom app icons, extended Stories, and advanced analytics.

What’s Included in Each Plan

Meta has rolled out three distinct subscription products:

  • Facebook Plus: $3.99/month — Advanced Story insights, unlimited close friends lists, extended Stories beyond 24 hours, Story previewing before posting, custom app icons, custom bio fonts, and additional profile pins
  • Instagram Plus: $3.99/month — Same features as Facebook Plus, tailored for Instagram’s interface including rewatch counts for Stories, the ability to search Story viewer lists, and smart heart reactions for Stories
  • WhatsApp Plus: $2.99/month — Custom ringtones, new app themes, additional pinned chats, exclusive sticker packs, and enhanced chat list customization

How This Differs From Meta Verified

Meta has clarified that these Plus subscriptions are separate from and complementary to Meta Verified, the blue checkmark service launched in 2023. Meta Verified focuses on account verification, impersonation protection, and direct support, while Plus subscriptions are purely feature-driven. Users can subscribe to both services simultaneously.

New Plans for AI, Creators, and Businesses

Meta has also teased upcoming subscription plans targeting specific user segments. Plans for Meta AI users may include enhanced AI assistant capabilities, such as longer conversation contexts and priority processing. Creator-focused plans could offer advanced analytics, monetization tools, and algorithmic boosting. Business plans may bundle advertising credits, team collaboration features, and API access.

Why Meta Is Going the Subscription Route

Meta’s pivot to subscriptions comes amid multiple pressures: declining advertising revenue growth, regulatory scrutiny over data collection practices, and Apple’s App Tracking Transparency framework that has cost the company billions in ad revenue. Subscriptions provide a more predictable, recurring revenue stream that doesn’t depend on user data for targeted advertising.

The move also aligns with a broader industry trend. X (formerly Twitter), Snapchat, Telegram, and Discord have all introduced premium subscription tiers in recent years, and Meta’s entry into the space was widely expected.

Are the Plans Worth It?

For most casual users, these Plus features are likely unnecessary. But for power users, content creators, and social media managers, the ability to extend Stories, access detailed analytics, and customize the app experience could justify the modest monthly fee. WhatsApp Plus’s $2.99 price point is particularly compelling for users who want additional chat customization and organization tools.

The plans are rolling out globally starting this week, so check your Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp settings to see if the option is available in your region.
