Three flagship wireless headphones. Three very different philosophies. We pit the Apple AirPods Max 2, Sennheiser HDB 630, and Sony WH-1000XM6 against each other to see which deserves your $500+.
Apple AirPods Max 2 ($549) — The ecosystem pick. ANC is class-leading now, finally matching Sony at its own game. Sound quality is excellent with a balanced, slightly warm signature. Spatial audio with head tracking remains unique to Apple. The catch: 20-hour battery life (half the competition), a bulky case that doesn’t protect the headband, and zero wired playback support. If you live in Apple’s world, the seamless handoff and Find My integration justify the premium.
Sennheiser HDB 630 (€500 / ~$540) — The audiophile’s choice. Neutral, detailed tuning with superb soundstage—arguably the best pure audio here. Build quality and comfort are merely adequate. ANC and transparency modes are the weak link: they trail both Apple and Sony noticeably. For critical listening at a desk, they shine. For travel and commute, the noise cancellation lets the side down.
Sony WH-1000XM6 ($460) — The safe, well-rounded option. Good ANC (second to AirPods Max 2), decent sound with a fun, bass-forward tilt, 30-hour battery, multipoint Bluetooth, and a collapsing design that actually fits in a bag. The bloated mid-bass and plasticky build keep it from greatness, but it’s the most versatile daily driver. With the XM7 likely imminent, the XM6 is a bargain if you catch a sale.
Verdict: iPhone users → AirPods Max 2. Audiophiles who prioritize sound over ANC → Sennheiser HDB 630. Everyone else → Sony WH-1000XM6 (or wait for the XM7).
