Weekly poll results: the OnePlus 16 could have been a global hit

The latest weekly poll from our tech community reveals that the OnePlus 16 could have become a worldwide success if the brand had expanded its reach beyond its current strongholds. Despite a solid brand reputation and a price point that remains competitive within the premium segment, the device’s steep cost in key markets appears to be holding it back.

The survey gathered responses from a broad cross‑section of smartphone enthusiasts. Roughly one‑third of participants said they would consider buying the OnePlus 16, but only if they could avoid the logistical hassle of importing a unit from abroad. In India — where the phone is already available through a local partnership — interest is noticeably higher than in regions where the device is not officially sold. Even among those who are aware of the phone’s existence, a small minority (about 12 %) described the price as “unreasonable,” a proportion that mirrors the share of consumers who voice similar concerns about other flagship models.

Pricing details add context to the debate. The base 12 GB/256 GB configuration carries a tag of roughly CNY 6,000, which exceeds the cost of the top‑spec OnePlus 15 (16 GB/1 TB) that launched the previous year at CNY 5,400. This price gap suggests that the OnePlus 16 positions itself at the higher end of the market, even though the company’s overall pricing strategy has remained relatively steady across its lineup.

The poll also highlights the competitive landscape. Oppo, which traditionally commands a premium price, and Realme, which notably omitted a GT‑series flagship this year, are seen as alternative contenders for consumers seeking high‑performance devices without the import burden. If OnePlus had broadened distribution, the device might have captured a larger slice of the global market, especially given its attractive design and strong specifications.

Overall, the data indicates that while the OnePlus 16 is well‑regarded, its limited availability and higher price are the primary obstacles preventing it from achieving broader international acclaim. Analysts suggest that a more aggressive global rollout, coupled with localized pricing adjustments, could turn the OnePlus 16 into a true worldwide bestseller, closing the gap with rivals like Samsung and Xiaomi in the coming year.
